Afrika Outbound
Toronto | Ontario | Hybrid
There is empowerment in travel that can inspire the individual
Afrika Outbound addresses the impacts of historical displacement and erasure of Black people by providing youth from equity-deserving communities with access to culturally relevant, immersive travel experiences to Black heritage sites across Ontario.
The programs use decolonial, place-based education combining multi-day travel to Underground Railroad areas of settlement with facilitated workshops, direct engagement with elders and descendants, and arts-based learning. We honour African ways of knowing through primary-source learning, oral histories, intergenerational knowledge transmission, and community-held knowledge that formal education systems often exclude.
Youth learn directly from Underground Railroad descendants, elders, and knowledge-keepers, and cultural stewards across the province. Through experiential learning grounded in Afrocentric frameworks, we connect youth with their cultural roots, develop a strong sense of identity and belonging, and equip them with tools to advance equity and combat racism in their communities and future professions, creating changemakers who transform institutions.
Mission
Afrika Outbound’s mission is to help youth and young adults from marginalized communities fully flourish into pioneers of positive change through the exchange of perspectives and ideologies obtained through travel.
Vision
To create a truly global world by removing the physical and invisible barriers surrounding outbound travel.
